Evaluating a Persuasive Speaker’s
Tone:
• Orators know that you can not approach all
audiences the same…some are friendly…some
are hostile; and sometimes you have a mix of
the two…
• The TONE in the speech should speak to both
groups.
• Again…Tone is what????
“I confess, that I do not entirely
approve of this constitution at
present;”
Was this written to persuade a hostile or
friendly audience members? Explain.
• He knows there are people in the audience
that are hostile, therefore wants to share his
misgivings from the start to catch their
attention as well.
• Now you try….
Was this written to persuade a hostile or
friendly audience members? Explain.
1. “Should I keep back my opinions at such a time,
though fear of giving offense, I should consider
myself guilty of treason toward my country, and
of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of
Heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings.”
(Patrick Henry)
•
Friendly – he reminds them of values that we all
share – a hatred of treason and being disloyal to
God’s will.
Was this written to persuade a hostile or
friendly audience members? Explain.
2. “Sir, to find this system [document]
approaching so near to perfection as it does;
and I think it will astonish our enemies, who
are waiting with confidence to hear, that our
councils are confounded…that our States are
on the point of separation, only to meet
hereafter for the purpose of cutting one
another’s throats.” (Ben Franklin)
• Directing towards a hostile audience, because
he knows there are audience members that
are not happy with the constitution.
• But even if they are not happy with the
document, he is showing them that approval
of the constitution will confound their
enemies, who are hoping they will fail….
