• While I am running Writing Conferences, take care of the
following tasks:
1. Two Tales of Christmas: In your comp notebook, create a
Venn Diagram to compare two Christmas stories in the
memoir: Christmas in the desert (pp.39-41) and Christmas in
Phoenix (pp. 114-115)
2. Question: What do the comparisons/contrasts suggest
about the trajectory (course, path, route) of Jeannette and
her siblings’ lives?

explicitly (content) and make logical inferences (craft & conclusions) from it, citing
specific evidence to support conclusions.
While I am running Writing Conferences, take care of the following tasks:
KEY PASSAGE PRACTICE – Small Group (approx. 30 min.)
1. Read aloud the ARG entry to the key passage “fire in the lab” (see handout)
2. Re-read the key passage “learning to swim at the hot pocket” (pp. 65-66)
3. In your comp notebook, create an ARG analysis (2 columns: Content &
Craft/Conclusions/Inferences) for the key passage (using the “fire in the lab” as a
model)
4. Read aloud the key passage analysis for “fire in the lab” (see handout)
