• Supercomputers are priced at $500K and up
• HPC systems priced at $3M+ grew 65% in 2009!
• Drivers: worldwide “petaflop race”; growing
recognition of HPC’s critical role in science and
industry

Race For Global Leadership Will Turbo-Charge
the Supercomputers Segment
The $500K and up Supercomputers segment did very
well in 2009 at about $3.4B
IDC predicts it will grow to $4.6B in 2014
IDC expects the $3M+ segment to grow to $1.4B in 2013
The race for HPC leadership might turbo-charge the
Supercomputers segment possibly for a decade to
come
Although the Petascale Era is just dawning,
governments around the world are already exploring
exascale computing

Petascale and Exascale Activities in
China
Two Petascale systems from China are already on the
latest Top500
– No.2 Nebulae
– No. 7 TianHe -1
Both systems were built by domestic manufacturers
Both are hybrid systems with GPGPU+CPU
configurations
More Petascale (and perhaps Exascale) machines are
in development -- expect few public announcements
but more surprises
– Will China system be the No. 1 on November’s
Top500?

Petascale and Exascale Activities in
China
Some Petascale and Exascale machines will be built on
China’s own CPU – the Longxin chip
Many new supercomputing centers are being built
– Increased government investment in HPC and rising
demand for HPC
– New centers will be the potential homes for future
Petascale and Exascale systems
Applications or industries that could benefit from
Petascale systems include: bio-science, nano research,
oil exploration, digital city planning, aerospace, weather
