Chinese New Year

• Chinese New Year is an important traditional Chinese holiday celebrated at the turn of the Chinese calanderr In China, it is also known as the Spring Festival, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name. Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally run from Chinese New Year's Eve, the last day of the last month of the Chinese calendar, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first month, making the festival the longest in the Chinese calendar. Because the Chinese calendar is Lunisolar (this means it depends on the moon) the Chinese New Year is often referred to as the "Lunar New Year".

Chinese culture

• In China they follow a culture which obedience and respect of elders and responsibility to community. The country is extremely large, so customs and traditions vary by geography and the more than 50 ethnic groups that reside in this country of 1.34 billion people.

Religion

• Because China is a communist state, there is no official religion. About a quarter of the people practice Taoism and Confucianism and other traditional religions. There are also small numbers of Buddhists, Muslims and Christians.

Cuisine

• Food is heavily influenced by geography. Among the main styles of Chinese cooking are Cantonese, which features stir-fried dishes, and Sezchuan, which relies heavily on use of peanuts, sesame paste and ginger and is known for its spiciness.

• Chinese food is generally based on rice.
