The School Breakfast Program (SBP) is a federally assisted
meal program that provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost
or free breakfasts to children each school day. It is
administered at the federal level by the USDA and at the
state level by ISBE.
Participating schools must serve breakfasts that meet the
federal nutrition standards and must provide free and
reduced-price breakfasts to eligible children.
Meal service for breakfast must be available every school
day near the beginning of the school day with adequate
time for the meal to be served and eaten.




The meal patterns are in a time
of transition at this time.
This screen shows the current
2011-2012 basic requirements
for breakfast.
The requirements will begin
changing in this upcoming 20122013 school year.
Requirements are the same
for 2012-2013 with the
following Exceptions:
o Milk requirement, which is already
in effect (1% and skim/fat free
milk only. Flavored must be
skim/fat free)
o Formulated grain-fruit products
not creditable

The Illinois Childhood Hunger Relief Act (Public Act 960158) stipulates that all public schools in which at least 40
percent of the students were eligible for free or reducedprice lunches in the preceding year must operate a
breakfast program. Provisions are included in the law to
allow a school district to opt out of the breakfast program
under certain financial circumstances. Detailed information

Severe-Need Breakfast:


An SFA may be eligible for a higher
rate of reimbursement for
breakfasts served to eligible
children in the current school year
based on USDA criteria for severe
need. Severe need reimbursement
is for sites serving breakfast to a
large percentage of low-income
students. To be eligible for Severe
Need Breakfast reimbursement, a
site must meet the following criteria:
Forty percent or more of the lunches
claimed at the site in the second
preceding school year were served
free or at a reduced price
State Incentive Funds:


