Content Management @ Villanova
Applicable to the University
A decentralized atmosphere requires an integrated
system
The Current Problem:
Villanova University has limited capabilities in
comprehensively managing digital content
• Digital content as “Digital Assets”
• University assets are extremely valuable
Appropriate Content Management will preserve,
secure, and enhance our access to valuable
assets
Possible Intangible Benefits
Reference during future litigation
Aid in development of a disaster plan
Catastrophic removal of C&F student/teacher records
Management of intellectual property related to
course content
Historical evidence in combating lawsuits?
‘Vaulted’ class discussions and debates
Retrieval/Display of up-to-date data
Application submissions and status
Content Management Options
Enterprise
Content Management (ECM):
Most comprehensive form of content
management software, which handles all
types of shared data in an organization.
Forms one university ‘silo’ of information.
Web
Content Management (WCM):
One module of a ECM system that focuses
specifically on web data (website). Can be
purchased separately from ECM to manage
only web content.
Enterprise CM vs. Web CM
Web Content Management (WCM)
Focuses on web content only
Enables web developers to...
• Better organize/customize web pages
• Streamline and automate web pages
• Place “Versioning” on pages (i.e. Keeping track of what
page is the most up to date)
Enterprise Content Management (ECM)
Includes WCM as well as capabilities to manage
University office docs, e-mails w/ attachments, and
graphic content (PDFs and JPEGs)
Provides equivalent functionality as WCM, but with
a broader scope on things
