Historical Content
• Anonymous poet lived between 7th century AD
and the 10th century.
• Poem was written in Northern Europe.
• Written in Old English.
• Story centers around the Danes ( Denmark) and
the Geats (Sweden).
• The sole surviving copy of the poem dates from
the year 1000 recorded by monks.
• Today the manuscript is housed in the British
Library.

Brief Summary of The Text
• Beowulf is a Geat warrior who crosses the sea
to defeat the monster, Grendel, who is
terrorizing the Danes.
• Beowulf later returns to his homeland to
succeed his uncle as king of the Geats.
