What is the desert
Deserts cover about 1/7th of the earth's surface.
A desert is a place that experiences very little rain
measuring 25cm or less a year.
It is one of the harshest places on earth.
Deserts have extremely high temperature in the day
and very low temperature at night.
Deserts are made of sand rocks, mountains, and sand.
Desert sands are often rocks, which has weathered
down to sand over the centuries

Animals in the desert
Camels
A hump that enables the camel to survive
without food for long periods of time.
The hump does not store water. They can
drink up to 46 liters of water in one
session, which will last for long periods.
Camels have two rows of long eyelashes, and
are able to close there nostrils for
protection from desert sand storms.
Snakes
Snakes can live in the desert because
they are cold blooded.
They need direct sunlight and heat to
warm their bodies to help them
move.
Their need for water is not
high.
The split hooves with broad pads are for more
stability, and prevents them from
sinking into the sand.

Plants in the desert
Cactus
The cactus has long roots can catch
water from the desert rains.
The stems do the job of storing the
food and water
The stems of the cactus grow upwards
rather than out.
Sidra tree
The Sidra tree lives in the desert environment
especially in the Arabian Gulf.
It can survive the desert heat and lack of
water.
It gives small fruit in winter time.
The sharp pointed needles, keep desert
animals away from sucking out
valuable liquid.
The cactus takes 2 centuries to grow.

Good Human Activities
People make protectorates in the desert for hunting,
building factories, making roads, protecting animals
and plants from humans, cars and engines.
Info from mom
Bad human activities
Construction work ruins the desert environment.
People throw trash in the desert, road vehicles in
unrestricted areas all over the desert.
Their vehicles leave tracks on the soil, which will scar
the land for decades. The developments of mechanics
are ruining the desert sands.
• Info from my
Mother
Solutions for human activities
Protecting the remaining deserts, by educating the public on the
importance of the natural biodiversities.
Finding solutions to satisfy different believes and culture.
Incorporating laws to preserve the plants and animals in deserts from
destruction.
The use of road vehicles only on designated roadways
