Wildlife & Nature Conservation Circle (1) and
Wildlife Divisions (4) of FD is mainly
responsible for Wildlife Conservation.
Legal policy of Bangladesh
• Bangladesh Wildlife (Preservation) (Amendment) Act
1974 has three schedules in which list of animals
are found for ordinary game hunting permission and
for protected animals which shall not be hunted,
killed or captured according to law.
• CITES listed species of fauna and flora are treated as
protected species in Bangladesh.
• Policy for Deer rearing, Elephant rearing, Crocodile
farming have been developed and approved
• Progress in New Bangladesh Wildlife (Conservation),
Act 2011 ( waiting for pass in the parliament).

• According to CITES Rules & regulations,
species of flora and fauna are incorporated
• Trade of CITES listed species prescribed as per
CITES rules, regulation & guide line
• Declaration and mgt. of CCA, PA, included
• In line with CBD Co-mgt, CCA, Rights of
indigenous people are recognized
• Provision of compensation for human and
wildlife conflict.

• Conservation of Wildlife & Bio-diversity is

Wildlife Trade:
• Bangladesh has virtually no regular trade on CITES
species from mid ninety.
• During 2001 to 2004 there was no commercial trade of
CITES species in Bangladesh.
• In Bangladesh we have only two commercial crocodile
farm
• During 2004, 75 Crocodylus porosus was imported from
Malaysia for the purpose of farming by a private farm
named Reptiles Farm Ltd. and in 2010 permission is given
for importing 10 breeder and exporting 67 nos. of
Crocodylus porosus to the same Farm and also given
permission to import 50 breeder in favor of Akiz Wildlife
Farm.
• Till to date no CITES permission is given for trading of
flora except agar wood chips.
• CITES export- import permission is given mainly for
research purpose.

• Inadequate, authentic data on informal trade hubs and
trade flow within the country
• Data on export and import of wildlife products are limited,
incomplete, and not up-to-date

Bureau, Exporters Guild Chamber, Bangladesh Police,

Initiatives for combating illegal trade of wildlife
• Transboundary issue is associated with flagship
species and could have cascade effect. A protocol
between
Bangladesh
&
India
is
under
consideration to sign for the protection of Royal
Bengal Tiger of Sundarbans.
• Chunati WL sanctuary is a designated CITES MIKE
site in BGD. Regular monitoring and reporting is
done.
• Regular (refresher’s) training of the officials and
staffs of Department of Forests have been going
on with the collaboration of WTB
• Bangladesh Tiger Action Plan(2009-2017), National
Tiger Recovery Program have been approved and
implementing
• DCF WL&NC is nominated for SAWEN Focal
Points of BGD.
Few Recent WL Crime Incidences
• On 23 May, 2010 at Dhaka Air Port, 480 nos. of star
tortoise were seized when those were tried to smuggled
to Malyasia by an Indian citizen Peer Mohammed of TN.
• On 02 July, 2010 at at Dhaka Air Port, around 1000 wild
birds ( 400 Hill mayna, 600 Love birds/Muniya of whom
about 50 is of central India origin and are endangered)
were seized when those were tried to smuggled to
Pakistan by a Pakistani citizen Ahmed Sheikh Wahed.
• On 29 Sept. 2010 at Bangkok Air Port, 1000 of star
tortoise and one Gharial were seized when those were
smuggled to Thailand from Bangladesh by a Pakistani
citizen Saeed Shaikh.
