Afterschool Activities
We will have a variety of afterschool clubs
and activities for middle school including
Robotics, Student Council, and National
Junior Honor Society.
 Due to our large geographic size, activity
buses will be limited.

Placement

Placement decisions regarding Extended
Language Arts and Extended Math will be
determined by the Middle School Math
and Language Arts Department Chairs.
Lockers
All students will be assigned a locker.
 It is essential that students memorize
their locker number and combination and
keep that information confidential.
 Students will also have a P.E. locker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we get recess?
No. However, outdoor activities may be part of a class reward system.

How does 6th grade class work compare to 5th grade?

6th grade and middle school classroom standards are more demanding with an increased level of rigor
and difficulty.

Will I have homework every night?

Yes. Although we don’t give regular homework on weekends, some projects or study guides may be
assigned over an extended period, to include weekends. Extended classes 6th through 8th grade should
expect more homework.

Will my teachers tell me what my grades are?

No. You will need to use Parent Portal. Students will access this using their student ID number and
birth date. Some teachers may require students to check this weekly.
Frequently Asked Questions

How important is it to be organized and use my agenda?

Students who use their agendas and stay organized using their accordion folders generally
do not have missing assignments. USE THEM!

I went on Parent Portal and saw that I have some NHI’s. What does that
mean?

Not Handed In. You did not hand in an assignment that was collected by the teacher.
Teachers have about 100 students’ work to grade and record. It is your responsibility to
turn in assignments on time.

How long do I have to make up an assignment that is NHI?

Typically, late assignments drop 1 letter grade for each day they are late. Turn it in as soon
as possible. Late assignments will not be accepted after one week.
Frequently Asked Questions

It’s the end of the quarter and I have a C in ________________. I need to make
a B so I won’t be grounded. Can I get extra credit?

In 6th grade, if you have missing assignments (NHI’s) you cannot receive extra credit. You
need to complete and hand in the work that is assigned to you. If you do not have any
missing work, your teacher may be able to provide extra credit as long as it is completed
and turned in two days before the end of the grading period. In 7th and 8th grade, this will
be determined by individual teachers.
I used to get all A’s and B’s in 4th and 5th grade. Will I get the same grades in
middle school?


It is possible to make A’s and B’s in 6th grade. However, most students find that it requires
much higher quality work and more dedication to schoolwork and study time to earn A’s
and B’s. For subjective assignments, A-quality work is above average, exceptional work
that shows significant time and effort. B’s reflect work that is standard, correctly
completed work. Assignments based on percentages (such as quizzes and tests) are
graded according to PWCS grading scale. Students entering 8th grade may see a decline in
grades since the grading scale changes from letters to raw percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have my device (iPad, Nook, iPod, phone, etc.) with me in class?

You may NOT have your phone with you at any time during the day. Phones must be
stored in backpacks, in the locker, and turned off. Other devices may be used in class IF
the teacher needs you to use them. The teacher will tell you in advance if you need a
device. Otherwise, DON’T BRING IT.

Can my electronic device be confiscated?

Yes. In accordance with the PWCS Bring Your Own Device [BYOD] Guidelines, any
device may be confiscated if it is out at any time or any place during the school day.

How much time do I have between classes?

You will have about 2 to 3 minutes between classes. During that time you need to use the
restroom or get materials you need for your next class from your locker.
Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I am late to class?
You will be marked Tardy, and your parents will
get an automated phone call from school.
 Excessive tardies will result in administrative
action, including detention.


Can I sit where I want at lunch?

Yes, as long as it is at your designated grade-level
table.
