Why use a formulary
• Products reflect best practice
• Staff engagement ensures live and trusted document
• Readily available
• Quick, easy and efficient
• Continuity of care
• Guide / support for new or inexperienced staff
• Wide knowledge base / information available for
products
Why use a formulary
• Negates need for multiple prescriptions
• Cost effective
• Dissemination of good practice
• User friendly with products grouped in categories, price
and quantity easily identified
• Timely – no wait for prescriptions
How it works within SCH
• All areas have identified products within the formulary
(favorites) that they use with set stock levels updated on
a weekly basis – this system may differ for practice
nurses
• Anything within the formulary can be ordered without
FP10
• Stock is delivered to base and used as required
Exception Reporting
• Estimated 20% of product use off formulary / secondary
formulary
• Preserves practitioner autonomy
• All exceptions reviewed with a view to adding to
formulary
• Enables reflection on practice
• Promotes best practice
• Facilitates central review from Head of Nursing
