Dual Credit Program Overview
What is Dual Credit?
• Dual Credit IS college. Students will be exposed to college level
material taught by CHS teachers at CHS.
• In Dual Credit classes, college credit is earned upon completion
of the class with a grade of “C” or higher (no additional test).
• Dual Credit grades become part of the student’s high school
and college permanent academic records
• Dual Credit courses generally transfer to most Texas Public
Universities
• It is the student’s responsibility to confirm with the school they
want to attend if credits will transfer
Potential Advantages of
Dual Credit
• Saves money
o
Students can earn up to 2 courses of college credit
each semester at no cost
o
Reduces the costs of tuition and textbooks resulting in
thousands of dollars in savings
o UTSA - 3 credit hour course costs $545.00
(estimated)
o
Northwest Vista costs
•1-6 credits are at a flat rate of $336.00 for In-District
Tuition (Bexar County) and $1,008.00 for Out-ofDistrict Tuition per semester
• Gets some prerequisites out of the way
Who Should Take Dual Credit?
• The Dual Credit program is designed for high school
juniors and seniors seeking to get a jump on their
college coursework.
• Students who have test scores that indicate they are
ready to enter the program and who feel comfortable
doing college level work should consider dual credit.
• Students are allowed to take a maximum of TWO Dual
Credit courses per semester.

Requirements for ALL
Dual Credit Students
• Dual Credit Students must maintain an overall
GPA of a 2.0 (C) in the dual credit course and
remain in good standing at their high school.
• Dual Credit Students who earn below a 2.0 (C)
in a single semester (fall or spring) will not be
allowed to continue in the dual credit program.
QUALIFYING TEST SCORES
(for current Sophomores)
• Accuplacer Test Scores (to be administered at CHS)
– Reading - 78
– Writing – 80
– Essay – 5 (6 for Biology and Environmental Science)
– Math – 70 (86 for College Algebra)
• SAT – 1070 Composite (Critical Reading + Math) with at least a
500 on each section
• ACT – 23 Composite (Critical Reading + Math) with at least a 19
on each section
• Student must send SAT/ACT scores directly to NVC before the
April 22 deadline

(for current Juniors)
• TAKS SCORES
• ELA-2200 plus 3 on essay
• Math-2200 (2300 for College Algebra)
• SAT – 1070 Composite (Critical Reading + Math) with at least a 500
on each section
• ACT – 23 Composite (Critical Reading + Math) with at least a 19 on
each section
• Student must send SAT/ACT scores directly to NVC before the
April 22 deadline

Application Process
• You can APPLY ONLINE!
Complete Application at applytexas.org before Feb. 8, 2013
Follow the “Steps to Apply” packet completely and have
parent complete residency questions (refer to the CHS
website under Dual Credit link for handouts – forms)
Turn in Student/Parent Consent Form after application is submitted
Test scores SAT or ACT (send scores directly to NVC) or take
Accuplacer before April 22, 2013 (if needed)
High School Transcript will be sent by CHS
Current Dual Credit Students
· Returning Student:
· No need to Re-Apply through Apply Texas
· Complete Student/Parent Consent Form
Dual Credit Deadlines
February 8, 2013
• Apply Texas Application must be completed and submitted
April 22, 2013
• Student/Parent Consent Form due in Counseling Office
• Deadline to submit SAT/ACT test scores from CollegeBoard
• Remaining SAT and ACT dates:
• SAT – Jan 26 and March 9 (BHS) (deadline Dec. 28 & Feb.8)
• ACT – February 9 (deadline Jan. 11)
June 7, 2013
• Students needing a qualifying test score may take an exam at
NVC in an attempt to qualify for dual credit participation
