Definitions.

 A noun is a person, place or thing. Examples: Mrs. Gomez, classroom, teacher Spot the nouns: Mrs. Minarchi is from New Jersey, the same town where they filmed Jersey Shore. Specific names of people, places and things are special types of nouns called __________ ________.

 2. Verb: A word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence.

 There are 3 types of verbs: Action, Linking and Helping  Examples: pitched, am, will throw   Spot the Verbs: It was sunny everyday in Jersey, so we went to the beach and surfed, got a tan and built giant, towering sandcastles.

  List: an action verb, a linking verb and a helping verb Use them to write your own sentence.

3. Pronoun: The part of speech that substitutes for nouns or noun phrases and designates persons or things asked for, previously specified, or understood from the context.

Pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, you (collective) they Possessive pronouns: My/Mine, your/s, his, hers, its, ours, your/s (collective), theirs/them Demonstrative pronouns: This/that, those/these

 4. Adjective: A word or phrase which describes or modifies a noun  Examples: tall tree, vanilla cake, flowing river  Spot the adjectives:  The Sound of Thunder is a short story about a man who likes to hunt increasingly wild species of animals …including gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex!

 

List a color, a flavor and smell Use these adjectives to write your own descriptive sentence



 5. Adverb: A descriptive word that qualifies a verb, adjective, other adverb, clause, or sentence and typically answers questions such as how?, in what way?, when?, where?, and to what extent?.  Examples: walking slowly, extremely happy, be here now.

  Spot the adverbs: Eckels obnoxiously pointed his rifle at the trees. Here, Mr. Travis stopped, slowly exhaled and growled low, “Not now!”  Write your own adverbs: -ly, when?, where?

 Now use your adverbs in your own sentences.

A prepositional phrase

Examples: with liberty and justice ; for all Spot the Prepositions: At 2:00, all of the juniors and seniors rush to their cars in the parking lot behind the school to get to their houses without regard for freshmen.

Write your own sentence using three preposition words. Underline the prepositional phrases (preposition + details).

 The most common prepositions are "about," "above," "across," "after," "against," "along," "among," "around," "at," "before," "behind," "below," "beneath," "beside," "between," "beyond," "but," "by," "despite," "down," "during," "except," "for," "from," "in," "inside," "into," "like," "near," "of," "off," "on," "onto," "out," "outside," "over," "past," "since," "through," "throughout," "till," "to," "toward," "under," "underneath," "until," "up," "upon," "with," "within," and "without."

         

A conjunction is a joiner, a word that connects (conjoins) parts of a sentence.

Conjunctions are: For And Nor But Or Yet So …… Or FANBOYS

 In a list: Mike the Situation spent his summer going to the gym, tanning, and doing laundry.

 But statements: The cheese steaks at Geno’s are good , but the ones at Pat’s are better.

 Two items: Snooki and J-Wow are two characters on the cast of Jersey Shore.

 Complex sentence: New Jersey is famous for it’s beaches, and infamous for it’s people.

 An interjection is a word or words added to a sentence to convey emotion. It is not usually grammatically related to any other part of the sentence.

      Examples: Ouch, that hurt!

Oh no, I forgot that the exam was today.

Hey! Put that down!

I heard one guy say to another guy, "He has a new car, eh?“ I don't know about you but, goodness me, I think we have too much homework!
