Project vision: Middle school–aged students in
underserved communities are empowered to drive

Sew Up the Safety Net for Women & Children
Project Goal

Working through an unprecedented public-private
partnership of Detroit’s major health systems, public
health, academic and community partners, we will
tighten a loose net of disconnected medical and social
services …

…thereby building a comprehensive, accountable system
of care that will engage the residents of three Detroit
neighborhoods to improve the conditions that lead to
infant survival through the first year of life.

Sew Up the Safety Net for Women & Children
Project Objectives
Connect 1,500 at-risk women, 375 pregnant (Group P) and
1,125 non-pregnant (Group NP), ages 18-34 years in the
Brightmoor, Osborn, and Southwest neighborhoods to
community and health care resources by 6/30/2014.
Improve awareness of health equity and racial disparities
in health care by providing educational sessions to 500
physicians, nurses, social workers, and other health care
professionals in the participating partner health systems by
3/31/2014.
Establish technologically relevant educational and
supportive products that will engage the broader
community in promoting good health status prior to and
during pregnancy.

 Conduct and facilitate research focusing on health and
healthcare disparities and to disseminate outcomes locally,
regionally, and nationally
 Develop community-based programs aimed at improving the
health status of underrepresented racial and ethnic
populations and other underserved groups
 Provide training to enhance the cultural competence of
employees, researchers, and health care providers and to
engage them as partners in working towards healthcare
equity

Goal

To increase knowledge, awareness, and
opportunities to ensure healthcare equity is
understood and practiced by Henry Ford
providers and other staff, the research
community and the community at large; and to
link healthcare equity as a key measurable
aspect of clinical quality.

 African American Men are 2.5 times more likely to
die from the disease than Caucasian men
 Prostate Cancer is the second-leading cause of
cancer death in African American men.
 If diagnosed in the late stages, African American
men have only a 29% five year survival
