Industrial break-away couplings are utilized in industrial product transfer
installations. The industrial couplings are specifically designed to be able to
activate with a tensile force being applied at an angle up to 90 degrees to the
hose or pipe. INSTALLATION BETWEEN A FIXED POINT (PIPE, PUMP OR
MANIFOLD) AND HOSE.

The breaking bolt industrial break-away coupling is
designed to minimize spillage and damage associated with
drive away and pull away incidents.
Provides protection against situations where a hose or loading arm
could be subjected to excessive loads
Coupling automatically senses an excessive load, closes the valves
and disconnects
Operates independently of shut off safety systems and does not
require an external power source
High flow rate with low pressure drop
Female NPT, Male NPT, ANSI/DIN flanges or any combination of
flange or thread
Standard seals are Viton®
Available in sizes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6”

Industrial break-aways are typically
installed on a loading arm or
manifold and hose assemblies, where
at least one side of the coupling is
attached to a rigid or fixed point.
Release with a tensile force
being applied at an angle to the
plane of the coupling housing,
up to 90 degrees.

Break Forces
The SB Couplings dry break-away couplings has three external breaking bolts. In
the case of axial tension all of the bolts take up the force corresponding to the
break force on the hose with a safety margin.
Non-axial forces concentrate the tension forces more strongly on one bolt, so that
the breakaway coupling reacts to the reduction of the hose break forces.
The break forces are transferred directly to the breaking bolts up to 90 degrees
from hose center

Marine break-away couplings are designed specifically to be installed within a
hose string between two lengths of hose. This coupling incorporates the same
internal mechanism as the Industrial couplings, but has additional features that
provide increased resistance to torsional and bending forces which may be
applied to the coupling. This make the coupling react only to tension in the hose
string and preventing premature activation in the unpredictable marine

environment.

designed to minimize spillage and damage associated with
pull-away incidents.
Typical applications include: ship-to-offshore platform and ship-toship product transfer operations
Designed to be installed in a hose string where the coupling will
be installed between two length of hose
Coupling automatically senses an excessive load, closes the valves
and disconnects
Release is executed when force causes bolts to break
Standard seals are Viton®
Female NPT, Male NPT, ANSI/DIN flanges or any combination of
flange or thread
Operates independently of shut off safety systems and does not
require an external power source
High flow rate with low pressure drop
Available in sizes 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8”

Marine safety break-aways are
designed to only release by inline
pull and used between two
strings of hose.
Release with a tensile force being
applied to the hose string
exceeds the tensile strength of all
three bolts.

Break Forces
The MSB Couplings dry break-away couplings has three external breaking bolts. In the case
of axial tension all of the bolts take up the force corresponding to the break force on the
hose with a safety margin.
Non-axial forces is minimized by an internal flange mechanism that provides increased
resistance to torsion and bending forces which may be applied to the coupling in a marine
application.
The break forces are transferred to the breaking bolts through the hose string. When the
force on the breaking bolts exceed their design load, the bolts break and allow the valves
to seal and separate.

How It Works
The Safety break-away couplings
consist of two halves, each with
a valve that has a flat typesealing surface similar to a dry
disconnect coupling.
When the force on the breaking
bolts exceed their design load,
the bolts break and allow the
valves separate.
The coupling automatically senses
an excessive load, closes the
valves and disconnects.
When the SBCouplings separate, it
allows the poppets to close.
The two poppets close rapidly,
minimizing product loss.

Non-Closure Version
The non-closure design acts purely as a safe parting point within the
transfer system, protecting equipment and personnel. With no internal
mechanism these couplings are utilized when the product is nonhazardous and spillage is acceptable. Such as a water supply line. 18
